Some Things Can Not Be Quarantined, Like Resilience

Monday, December 14, 2020

Dear children,

Thank you for your resilience these past 8 months. Young adults, I know college wasn’t what you expected this year. Whether you came home to live across the street in the blue flat, or if you were stranded on campus abroad - I’m so proud of how you weathered one disappointment after another, kept your head held high, and showed up for your online classes. I rarely heard you complain, even when all the expectations you had for the year went out the window. I appreciate how you have all adapted and been there for each other as a family. I love how you stepped up to take on more responsibility at home, helped your younger siblings, and took this time for personal growth. Whether it’s workouts on the roof to get stronger, learning a new instrument online, cooking meals for our family, experimenting with a comedy show on youtube, or finding a new author or book to explore - I have to say, I have been quite impressed by your ability to adapt to all of this. In the dictionary it says that resilience is about an ability to recover from, or adjust easily to misfortune or change.

"I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it."

When I think about one word I would use to describe you, resilience always floats to the top. I say it all the time but I hope you know how grateful I am that, out of all the kids in the world, I ended up with each of you. You have taught me so much and, most of all, you’ve taught me resilience.  I love you more than words can say. Being so far away feels impossible at times and I can’t wait to be together again.
