Happy Women’s Day!

Thursday, March 08, 2018

In honor of International Women's Day, our Girls' Club worked hard alongside our Health and Wellness Administrator, Meelan, to organize our 4th annual Race for Equality. The race was initially inspired by our friends at She's the First. Girls' Club spent many hours the week leading up to the race planning the day and recruiting runners. They even visited our new school campus construction site to campaign for the run! More than 200 students and staff signed up to run.

Run happy!

On the race day, our kiddos wrote their reason for running on their race bib. It was one of the most touching parts of the race. Our school president ran "for the women sold in brothels." One of the young adults in our children's home ran "for my sister Ruby Sunshine and Maggie mom!

Who do you run for?

One of our 8th-grade boys gave an inspiring speech about women's rights and how he wants to make the world a better place for his female friends, sisters, and classmates. A Girls' Club member led a warm-up stretching dance and then the kids were off! The younger students made an amazing cheering squad to encourage their older classmates as they ran by. Kids crossed the finish line hand in hand with their friends. We finished the day by doing what we do best here at Kopila - having a dance party! We celebrated the strong runners and all of the strong women in our lives and around the world.
