First Week Of Construction

Friday, June 15, 2007

The first week of construction has gone really well. Things have moved fast and smoothly and we’re happy with the contractors working with us. They’re the best of the best in the area. It’s the dog days of summer here, extremely hot, and obviously, there’s no cranes or bulldozers here, just a bunch of men and their shovels digging the foundation. I kind of feel bad just sitting there and watching but I’ve been spending pretty much all of my time running here and there trying to get the paperwork through for my registration.

It’s a lot more work than I expected and all of these papers are in Nepalese, which of course I can’t read yet. So everything has to be translated for me. I hired a lawyer (something like that) to help me translate our bylaws so that we could get the wording exactly right. He’s really nice and has a lot of connections in the government here so that’s been helping us out. We have to go to about ten different office buildings in one day. It’s a lot of walking and a lot of sitting around in waiting rooms until we get a chance to talk to the official we need to or get the right signature for approval. We’re getting there slowly but surely.

This is me during the first few days of construction standing in the first pillar for the foundation. Just a few minutes after this picture was taken I was walking by one of these holes and fell in. Don’t worry everyone saw me.
