Love Letter #24 (50 Love Letters)

Monday, May 30, 2016

Dear P,

Do you have any idea how proud I am of you? It makes me beam with pride to call you my son. How do I describe you? The first place I love to watch you is out on the soccer field. You're the team captain, the one who makes all the big plays and passes, always gets back on defense and always makes me hold my breath on a big breakaway as I watch you dribble down the field. Messi is your idol. I kind of think you look like him, especially when you play. I remember the first time you put on the jersey with his name on the back and the way you smiled.

You've always been a quiet leader wherever you are. You're genuinely good friends with everyone in the family and everyone at school. You're the big brother who carries the little ones down and puts them to bed when they fall asleep in satsung. And then there's you and S. You've probably carried him up and down the stairs of our house a thousand times. You've carried him running the bases at kickball. You've carried him on miles long hikes and camping trips up and down mountains. It makes me cry to think of all the places you've carried him on your back. You've made it a point for us not to let his handicap get in the way of participating in everything we do as a family. It's a kind of brotherhood that can't be taught (unless you're in the Marines).

When I think of you, the words dedication and integrity come to mind. You dream of being a professional soccer player and I've watched the hours you've put in and your love for that sport. I've watched you watching Nepal's national team play on TV and the World Cup and the way your eyes light up when you talk about soccer. I can't wait to take you to a real professional game some day in a real stadium. We'll order popcorn and Fanta and paint our faces and jump up and down with noisemakers.

This summer your lifelong dream of going to soccer camp came true. You'll love it!!! Dreams come true when you work hard. Always remember that and always remember how much I love you, my very own little Messi. You have grown into such an amazing young man.
Xoxo Mom
