I’ve gotten lots of calls and message from people around Nepal asking my perspective on flood relief. Here are my thoughts as well as some information I’ve gathered after getting to see the camps and talking to as many victims as possible these past few days.

I haven’t had time to write up a proper blog so I’m just writing up some quick notes and an update with what’s going on with our flood relief here in Surkhet. We’re mobilizing as best we can and it feels like every minute is pretty intense around here. There’s some immediate work to do as well as some long term rebuilding to think about.

Floods are sneaky. They start with a few drops, indistinguishable from a harmless cloudburst. Few other natural disasters can tiptoe in under the radar like a flood can – there's no gentle start to an earthquake; no one ever sees the beginning of a wildfire and thinks nothing of it.

On Friday, August 15, 2014, the Surkhet region in Western Nepal experienced heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding, which continues to this day. Steady rain began Wednesday night and has continued almost without pause for 48 hours straight. The rivers in the region swelled to new widths with force, ripping through neighborhoods and taking out bridges & homes. The number of dead and missing is still unconfirmed, and most areas are completely without power.

It’s my first time mothering teenage boys and it just blows my mind; how they are so tender and sweet and kind but then one second later you look over and there they are beating each other up.
