Sarah Kay In The House!

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Sarah Kay, came to visit Kopila this past week!  If you don't know Sarah Kay, you totally need to check her out.  Her Ted Talk is one of my all time favorites!  We were introduced to each other through our good mutual friend, Matt Goldman and I immediately got the chills when I watched her performances. Fast forward, just a little over a year later and here she is up on stage at Kopila Valley! Sarah had a poetry trip that brought her to Kathmandu and as luck would have it, she made her way over here to Kopila afterwards. Amazing right? Talk about crazy out-of-this-world wishes coming true.

Sarah Kay in action.

We were all absolutely awe struck, captivated, enthralled, and totally inspired by Sarah's poetry.  She taught a poetry workshop with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as well as our teachers and volunteers and in just hours, had the kids writing poems, laughing, learning, smiling, and performing their very own spoken word poetry. The kids say (and I quote) that "it was the best thing they had ever experienced in their whole entire lives."

Little poets in the making!

We feel so lucky and fortunate to have had the amazing Sarah Kay here with us in Nepal.  It was one of those unforgettable experiences that we will talk about forever.  Next up, Kopila Valley's very own Poetry Slam Session. We NEED to make that happen!

Sarah's workshops are always a blast!

NYC and NJ friends, Sarah will be performing for a hurricane Sandy Relief Event at Joe's Pub, on December 26th!

Reading your poems takes courage.  Sarah herself!
