International Day of the Girl 2014

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

We had an awesome International Day of the Girl celebration last Friday!

The Day of the Girl was started in 2012 "to raise awareness about all issues concerning gender inequality around the world.  It’s a day when activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere…We want ourselves, and girls everywhere, to be seen as equals, in the eyes of others and in our own eyes."

To start things off, our older girls Skyped with their teenage counterparts from the United States at the Kent Place School in New Jersey.  They exchanged questions – "What's your favorite movie? What do you do for fun?" – and learned just how much unites them, despite being thousands of miles apart.

Maggie also Skyped with the Saint Dominic Academy in New Jersey, an all-girls school near her hometown.  It's always amazing to be able to speak to tomorrow's change makers.  These girls are going to go places!

To top off the day, Maggie participated in a panel discussion hosted by Dining for Women on the importance of a holistic approach to girls' education.  She was one of three panelists, and they each took questions after their presentations.  We're so grateful to Dining for Women for their support, as always!

Thanks to all of you for helping to support our girls every day of the year, we couldn't do it without you.
