All my life I have been called Nisha and now all of sudden I am called Mamdaba. It’s weird how you feel so connected to one name and how important your identity is. But I like my Senegalese name as well. I will always be Mamdaba to my host family and my community in Senegal. Sometimes having this new different name makes me think I am a different and new me.

I was in 9th grade when I first went to the US. I was doing a student exchange program. I never thought I'd even go to the US, or be able to study there, or study in the Netherlands. Now I'm doing a gap year in Senegal, and going to college next year. I would have never thought all of this would be possible. Sometimes I feel like I'm still living in a dream.

In May of 2018, Nisha graduated and made the decision to follow in Maggie’s footsteps by taking a gap year of her own. This journey has come full circle for Maggie, and to prepare Nisha for her next adventure, they decided to sit down to go over any questions and last minute jitters. I visited our Big Sisters' Home this morning. When I learn their stories I feel like they are something I should be reading in The New York Times or a novel and then I remember, this is real and true and they are standing in front of me and they are the girls I know and love.

A year ago today we threw the kids a mega party and read vows on top of a Himalayan mountain declaring our love and commitment to each other and to our kids.
