the more you read...

It's Friday night.  I checked into bed early with Namraj.  I can hear the kids all laughing out loud playing a game with Lexi. Our Friday night movie was cancelled due to our lack of electricity and the fact that our big projector bulb is officially toast. I'm laying here next to little sleepy head trying to catch up on all that is going on in the world. It's getting warm and beautiful and breezy here.  The sun is nearly always shining and the first sign of warm weather's mosquitos are buzzing. Tomorrow we have our usual Saturday in store: showers, and clothes washing, fingernail trimming, clean-up and garden work, and an afternoon family game of football or maybe capture the flag... whatever the kids can all agree on.

Did you know it's Doctor Suess's Birthday?  I didn't until I read this post just now.  Our partners at She's the First wrote a blog feature that I love on what we and our friends at the Kibera School for Girls in Kenya are reading right now!

Elizabeth quotes Dr. Suess, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”  I want to print this little quote up and put it in our library.

Hats off to Libby and the kids and all of YOU our supporters, and our super cool friends at She's the First! It's kind of crazy beautiful to think that just two years ago, none of our kids could read and comprehend an entire sentence and now they're reading chapter books and not wanting to put them down.  It makes me excited for what the future has in store.

Harimaya (class 5)

What are you reading right now?  We'd love to know.

Reading books is a good hobby. Because the more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more place that you will go. The more that we have knowledge, the more power we have.

Now I'm reading "The Mind's Eye " by Oliver Sacks (can be interesting for the older children to read "Seeing voices" about deaf people and their community in USA? He is a poet of the science that write about the adventures of humans, unique).

Pawan 7 years old is reading Mickey Mouse, Tex, Gruffalo and many others (any evening he wants a new book...). Sometimes I feel live the mother of "Olivia" by I. Falconer (there are also a web site you can see about this little pig).

At the age of Harimaya I loved to read C. Darwin: it was fantastic (I red his books in Italian).
Thank you to the library of my little town that gived me so much as a girl and to my family that allowed me to do.

my favorite books to read to my nieces and nephews is the David Pelham pop-up books about the brother and sister "sam and samantha", who play tricks on each other with their food, burying yucky stuff inside it. (series is: "Sam's Sandwich", "Sam's Surprise", "Sam's Pizza", "Sam's Snack", "The Sensational Samburger")

it all rhymes, it's really cute. there's something for the kids to open/unfold on each page to discover what yucky thing was hidden in the food which always completes the last word of the rhyme. my nieces and nephews continued to love to read the books long past the 'official' upper-age category because they're so fun. (and no, it never encouraged any of them to actually sabotage their sibling's food!) my favorite of all the 'sam & samantha' series is 'the sensational samburger".

lastly, some of his newer pop-up books, not related to sam & samantha, are not nearly so fun.

I have started the Gospel of John in the New Testament Bible. We are in the Lent, season of
self-examination and renewal of our relationship with Jesus.

I am also delving into my relationship with the Holy Spirit by reading the Acts of Apostle in the Bible.

Bible is the story of Jesus Christ. It can be a wonderful story book teaching about christian love for other people. If you send my your address I can send you a few BIble Story Books and dvds for children. I know they will love it.

God bless you for the christian love you are showing.

Maggie-
Been following you and your kids' blog since I discovered your adventure last year & love hearing about everything. Although I'm in my mid-20's, I never read Harry Potter growing up. So me and two of my younger sisters are going through the series together.

I'm reading Harry Potter. Ahh the endless reading of JK's book series, which I just can't resist not reading. You must be very proud of the kids. I hope they continue to be enthusiastic especially in learning new things. Reading is just a step forward.
