Animal Vegetable Miracle(s)*

Our gorgeous blooming garden sits beside our house

I loved the book, Animal Vegetable Miracle (by Barbara Kingsolver) so much that straight after I read it I marched out into the side yard and planted ALL of this (above) with the kids. It was our big project while they were all off from school in October. There are carrots, radishes, onions, beat root, broccoli and lettuce lettuce lettuce. The past two days all the kids at school have had salad with their lunch which makes me really proud.

This book is awesome if you’re trying to raise your kids with a good food consciousness. Even though our garden was a lot of work for all of us, carrying compost, and removing tons of stones, planting, transplanting and watering, we are really reaping the benefits this month.

Also check out our new Kopila School Garden (below). Special thanks to The Emily C. Specchio Foundation for their support and inspiration.

Coming soon, the SCHOOL PLAYGROUND! For now, here are some more pictures of what is growing at Kopila...

With soil, water and sun plants will grow..that is nature. The true miracle is all the hard work and willingness (of you and your children) to just get out there, dirty your hands and create this beautiful space that nourishes the soul and body!

Bibby...there are tons of butterflies in Nepal. Even moths.

Good job Maggie. If only I could grow that way in my backyard. The rabbits and deer destroyed all my green veggies here last summer. :( Hopefully next summer...

If only more schools here would let us do that! But no, we have to fill our kids up with chocolate milk poured onto sweetened cereal and canned fruit to wash down their cinnamon rolls! What the USDA calls a healthy meal so schools can get free food! I am so going to show people at work these photos! Good job!

From a song of my green age:

"....
Freedom, freedom:
I have seen it into cultivaded fields,
cultivated with sky and money, with sky and love..."

Little and big gardeners: it's a plesuse to look at your work!

This posting may be more relevant to other posting (Maggie stepping up to teach math education). Here is an excellent educational resource by Khan Academy (math and science):

http://www.khanacademy.org/

Khan Academy and its worldwide appeal have been praised by Bill Gates, CNN, and many more all over the world. It is one of the best free educational materials (free and even better than MIT and Harvard's open resources). Teachers from all over the world are using it in their classrooms. It also just got $2mill google award...

This is AWESOME Maggie! How excited the kids must be to be eating from their very own garden :) Thanks for the foundation shout out. I have a feeling that Emily is somewhere feeling very proud. We can't wait to hear how the playground comes along - you are amazing!

It took me the whole day to go through your posts, videos, pictures and the stories, basically I invested my 12 hours just reading abt the good deeds you initiated in surkhet which was definitely worth reading.
Maggie you are the inspiration, the good heart and a hard working youth who I had read in history....but you are the living modern Florence Nightangle (though you are not a nurse, i am just addressing to the idea of her benevolent, selfless social/humanitarian action).
Well, for most part of my childhood, i have lived in surkhet and today when i see you and your approach to helping out kids in surkhet and working out days just for their sake, i can't keep myself from writing you and give you an honorable salute..and FIVE STARS (just like in movie rating)....
No Wonder why you won hundred grands from Do something.....Coz you are DOING SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
may god bless you
